If you can't install Keyword Manager 1.4

Postby Johan » Sat Nov 17, 2007 3:49 pm

In Keyword Manager version 1.4, we use the newest version of SIMBL, to make the plug-in compatible with Mac OS X Leopard. This new version of SIMBL must be installed in the shared library folder of the system, while the older versions could be installed in each user's own library.

In order to install Keyword Manager 1.4, you need to make sure you do not have a SIMBL installation in your own library folder. If you do, please remove it before running the Keyword Manager installer application. Look in:

~/Library/InputManagers/

where ~ means your home folder. If there is a folder called SIMBL there, move in to the trash.

There are two symptoms that you might have a conflicting SIMBL installation:

a) The SIMBL installer won't install, and gives you an error message,
b) Keyword Manager installs, but won't show up in iPhoto.

I have followed these instructions but it still does not work. The installer works, it does install a copy of SMBL in the (global) Library Folder, but Keyword Manager won't start when I start iPhoto. I use iPhoto 6.06 on Leopard.

Are you using the latest version (1.4.3, released a couple of days ago)?

It seems as if the installer sometimes installs SIMBL with the wrong read-write permissions. When that happens Mac OS will refuse to load SIMBL. If you were using an older version, please remove the SIMBL folder from /Library/InputManagers and try the new installer. When you have installed the software again, if it still does not work, try running the following command in a Terminal:

ls -lR /Library/InputManagers/SIMBL

You will get a file listing of all SIMBL related files. First in each line is the read-write permissions for that file or folder. If it does not say rwxr-xr-x or rwxr--r-- Mac OS will not load SIMBL. If there are any problems it can be fixed by using the following command in the Terminal:

sudo chmod -R 755 /Library/InputManagers/SIMBL

You must be an administrator user to be able to run this command. It will ask for you administrator password.

Please don't try this if you are not sure of what you are doing! Messing around with the Terminal can be dangerous and you can damage your system if you type something incorrectly.

I am using the latest version, the permissions are all OK and yet KM won't start under Leopard. I have also a disk with Tiger installed : I started in Tiger and I have installed KM on it. Then I started the copy of iPhoto I hav on my Leopard disk: it ran flawlessly in Tiger. Clearly, there is something wrong with KM in Leopard. I can provide you with more detailed info on my system (logs, etc). Just ask. I would really like to be able to continue using KM in Leopard; this is a valuable addition to iPhoto.

I finally managed to have KM works in Leopard. First I have upgraded to iPhoto 8 but that did not help. Second, I have installed the latest version of SIMBL which I found at

http://www.culater.net/software/SIMBL/SIMBL.php

That did the trick. The version of SIMBL provided with KM is 0.8 it seems outdated.

I'm not sure if I understand on what you installed Keyword Manager. On your vista?
When is it giving you the 405 error code, and how?
